cakes.
So i stumbled upon threadless's cake competition, threadcakes which i was not aware of until this morning. and decided pretty much immediately that i had to participate.
i mean, almost 3yr bakery employee, sculpture, artist, summer boredom ... have to, right?
plus there are my previous cake, explorations.
Vag Cake, for a friends birthday.

(on that note, you should check out this, hysterectomy cakes; cake wrecks is great in general sift around a bit)
leg cross section, and ab muscle implant.
for a friends birthday after, his long stints in the hospital with i highly infected broken leg; almost lossing the leg a couple of times. (complete with raspberry and lemon fill infection goo)

21st birthday keg party vomit cake.

hamburger cupcakes, for my recent housewarming party.

now to decide which design to do.....

in an age of technology and recent events i can't help but think about place, or a persons sense of place geographically speaking.
i revert back to art history and think of movements, like the furturists and dadaists; then place meant everything. artists caught word of this movement and moved there to be a part of it.
with the internet at my fingertips almost constantly, my sense of place seems to dissolve into the webplaces i visit and how informed i am. now, one can be at anyplace at any moment; its a mind boggling powerful thing to think about.
ones place only seems to become relevant when it is affected by something that is out of the persons hands, such as a flood, a job, etc.

"i survived the fargo flood of 09, i think"
things have returned to normal, but beware the second crest. (note 4/15)
its not over yet.
in all the craziness i didnt have much time to know what day it was nor know what the next day would bring let alone blog about it, so heres a little recap.
i spent the first day at the danz's place in fargo, section 5; the lovely owners of zandbroz. we tossed, yes tossed sandbags the whole time. this action quickly dissipated as days progressed. tossing 20 to 40 pounds for hours straight takes its toll on you. tossing became dropping, became rolling, became carrying of bags; from person to person.
it was rainy
the second day was spent in moorhead, at an employee of zanbroz's house. In fargo they drop the sandbags off of flatbed trucks in front of the your house, you call as you need them. this is not the case in moorhead; you have to go pick them up from sites yourself. or occasionally someone would drive by with a truck and ask if you needed any. much of the day was spent driving a few blocks, to go pick up sandbags by the old power plant, a proclaimed filling station. driving back and forth in an the truck was empty and sandbags were placed often before i could even get out of the truckbed from unloading it.

it was wet and muddy from the previous rain. and we built this.....

flood as of that day.
that night they raised the expected flood level, and told people to build their dikes a foot or two higher.
so the third day was spent, in snow at the danz's then at jen's again. raising both dikes to be high enough, 43 feet. there were so many volunteers at the danz's that a couple of a just walked up and down the road helping whatever line looked like it needed more people.
the fourth day, i had become ill. sore throaty, disoriented, cranky, and barely functioning. i went to matts with the full intention of picking him up and going to the fargodome to fill extra backup sandbags, and just ended up falling asleep and being told by multiple people that i should just stay home.
in the mean-time of all of this. i spent my days constantly checking river levels, the news, contingency plans(i am in the part that doesnt have an evauaction plan since we are on the highest ground therefore the safest), the city of fargo website, the flood facebook page, and so on and so on.
and then, yet another blizzard.

spent my blizzard day resting, lunching, baking, and experimenting.
in all of this i only took pictures the second day really, for high quality photos i recommend a friend of mines site, and the ndsu geology page.
then theres aways, here
or a classic google search
the fargo flood 09:
was declared a disaster area by obama.
brought the national guard to town.
broke records.
has caused the cancellation of 2 weeks of school.
and much much more.

things feel as though they've returned to normal... school is back in session on monday... i've worked half of this week, occassionally listening in on conversation about the flood.. people talking about tshirts that should be made before its over in anticipation of the second crest, " i survived the fargo flood of 09... i think"
id go with:

flizzard, the begining
its already been a crazy month of things out of my or anyones control. last year fargo had sleet/snow storms in april and on the first day of may. i remember this because of a car accident i'd gotten into due to the weather. this accident brought a new experience, my first and only (to date) concussion; which is by far the most frustrating injury i've had. despite the sloshing of brains i remember the crazy weather quite distinctly, the old womens (that i hit) blue coat, and my anger toward her for running for a witness before seeing if i was okay.
this year, march:
we havent even reached april and things have gone a bit bananas. earlier,... i cant remember when.. a sunday though i know that much i wanna say november/december. there was a blizzard that shut down the whole town. i got to enjoy (the new) feeling of having a 4 wheel drive truck, calling my father to thank him graciously for such a superb vehical; my saturn (plastic) and sunbird (really low) have nothing on Millie (my truck).
then just three weeks ago, a thursday there was another blizzard that shut down the whole town, school and work were closed for the day; this does not happen often in fargo. i still got up the next day at 6am to be to work (a whole 6 blocks away) by 7am. i didnt see anyone that wasnt in a snowplow or snowblowing until i think 9am.
last week was spring break from school(i went home for a few days), and this week it is continuing because of probably record amounts of flooding,...so far spring break has been extended two days.... so far.
i havent had to work either, i was called early and asked to not come into work and to go sandbag. which jesse and i did followed by nachos and coffee. my body aches today.. theres no school and im trying to get the gumption to go out and do it again.
needless to say all of this has thrown everything off kilter just a bit. i dont even know what to do or where to start when school is back in session. this last semester already feels so strange.
personally though this is the part of fargo i like, the blizzards, the floods,... the thunderstorms.. i think its amazing when life as usually stops and priority takes over, be it safety or be it protection. the whole town transforms so quickly it boggles the mind.. we go from a smallcity thats really just a largetown to ghosttown or zombie movie set over night. its exciting, nerve wracking, worrisome, and joyous all at the sametime.
i dont know about you guys, but im soaking this state of anomie, before daily routine and thoughts about the economy come back. its a tiring, muscle building break from normal life.
